The Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) recently hosted its 23rd annual Showcase Awards Gala where 11 Awards of Excellence and 11 Awards of Merit were announced, recognizing the best of the best in engineering design and innovation. Morrison Hershfield’s contributions were
Award of Merit – Wastewater Category
Kaliti Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sanitary Sewer Trunk Mains
Morrison Hershfield was presented with an Award of Merit in the Wastewater Category for The Kaliti Wastewater Treatment Plant and Sanitary Sewer Trunk Mains, for the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority (AAWSA) in Ethiopia. The judges commented that “The attention to detail and meeting the needs of the client made this project shine in a very competitive field.”
The World Bank and the Government of Ethiopia entered a loan agreement to construct a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Kaliti and twin the existing trunk main to help support growth in Addis Ababa.
This project offers numerous benefits to the community, such as improving the health and livelihood for city residents and rural communities living downstream of the Akaki River, reducing the risk of water-borne diseases, improving the quality of rivers and streams flowing through the city, short and long-term employment during construction, operation and maintenance of the system and enabling the reuse of treated wastewater for agriculture and industrial purposes.
Award of Excellence - Project Management Category
Calgary Transit Operations Control Centre: Mission Critical Facility
Congratulations to our partner Hatch for receiving the Award of Excellence for the Calgary Transit Operations Control Centre: Mission Critical Facility! Morrison Hershfield is proud to play a key role
The Operation Control Centre (OCC) is Calgary Transit’s hub for critical operations of their Light Rail Transit, bus, safety and security systems. Continuous transit system expansions since 2001 resulted in the existing operations control centres outgrowing their respective facilities.
On October 21, 2017, the entire Calgary Transit operation (including rail control, bus control and public safety functions) transferred to the new purpose-built facility, without interruption to the travelling public. The seamless transfer of all control systems, functions and staff was a testament to the design skills, dedication, planning and long hours expended by the entire project team.
The new OCC is a highly resilient, state-of-the-art mission critical facility – a direct result of excellent project management, a highly engaged team of industry experts, and a very knowledgeable and involved client team. The overall layout, electrical and mechanical infrastructure and systems, including the state-of-the-art display management system, were designed with consideration for future expansion of the OCC to support Calgary Transit’s long-term strategic plans identified in the ‘Route Ahead’ plan.
We congratulate all of our partners and colleagues who are advancing innovation and excellence in consulting engineering in Alberta and throughout the world. Find a complete list of 2019 Showcase Award winners here.
