This project offers numerous benefits to the community, such as improving the health and livelihood for city residents and rural communities living downstream of the Akaki River, reducing the risk of water-borne diseases, improving the quality of rivers and streams flowing through the city, short and long-term employment during construction, operation and maintenance of the system and enabling the reuse of treated wastewater for agriculture and industrial purposes.

Calgary Transit Operations Control Centre: Mission Critical Facility

Congratulations to our partner Hatch for receiving the Award of Excellence for the Calgary Transit Operations Control Centre: Mission Critical Facility! Morrison Hershfield is proud to play a key role on this exceptional project team.OCC_Panorama1L_CalgaryTransitOCC_With CofC CREDIT

The Project

The Operation Control Centre (OCC) is Calgary Transit’s hub for critical operations of their Light Rail Transit, bus, safety and security systems.  Continuous transit system expansions since 2001 resulted in the existing operations control centres outgrowing their respective facilities.

On October 21, 2017, the entire Calgary TransitIMG_0983_CalgaryTransitOCC_With CofC CREDIT operation (including rail control, bus control and public safety functions) transferred to the new purpose-built facility, without interruption to the travelling public. The seamless transfer of all control systems, functions and staff was a testament to the design skills, dedication, planning and long hours expended by the entire project team.

The new OCC is a highly resilient, state-of-the-art mission critical facility – a direct result of excellent project management, a highly engaged team of industry experts, and a very knowledgeable and involved client team.   The overall layout, electrical and mechanical infrastructure and systems, including the state-of-the-art display management system, were designed with consideration for future expansion of the OCC to support Calgary Transit’s long-term strategic plans identified in the ‘Route Ahead’ plan.

We congratulate all of our partners and colleagues who are advancing innovation and excellence in consulting engineering in Alberta and throughout the world. Find a complete list of 2019 Showcase Award winners here.
