Engineers Canada has released a series of videos profiling this year’s award recipients. One of those featured is Morrison Hershfield’s COO, Catherine Karakatsanis, P.Eng., who received the prestigious Gold Medal Award in recognition of her remarkable achievements and contributions.
TORONTO, CANADA (May 24, 2019) – Catherine Karakatsanis, P.Eng., received the 2019 Engineers Canada Gold Medal, this country’s top honor among the 295,000 Professional Engineers in Canada, at a ceremony in Québec City. Each year, the Gold Medal may be awarded to a Professional Engineer for “exceptional individual achievement and distinction in a field of engineering”. This includes industry accomplishments, service to the engineering profession and contribution to the community, and sets the bar high for those who follow in their footsteps.
The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), announced the election of a new chair and vice-chair to lead the TR-14 Structural Standards for Communication and Small Wind Turbine Support Structures Engineering Committee. Morrison Hershfield would like to congratulate the new leadership; Chairman Brian Lanier, Vice-Chairman Dave Hawkins as well as Secretary Christopher Ply. We would also like to acknowledge the leadership of outgoing Chairman: John Erichsen (EET Engineering) and Vice Chairman: Mark Malouf (Malouf Engineering) for their steady and tireless leadership over the last several years. Under John’s leadership, the committee published TIA-222-Rev H in record time; which was an amazing accomplishment!
Morrison Hershfield participated in Canstruction on May 13th at the TD Centre in downtown Toronto. Canstruction is a competition that challenges teams to design and build structures made entirely from canned foods within a 10’x10’x8’ space. Teams compete for the titles of Best Original Design, Structural Ingenuity, Best Use of Labels, Best Meal, Honourable Mention and People's Choice Award. After the exhibition, the structures are deconstructed and all of the cans are donated to Daily Bread Food Bank, the largest provider of food relief in the area.
Morrison Hershfield staff participated in a wonderful day of fun and fitness at the 19th Annual Riverwalk Run, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Hosted by the Junior League of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Inc., the Riverwalk Run is an annual event to raise funds for improving the surrounding community.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project was recognized by CG/LA Infrastructure with the prestigious 2019 Oracle Project of the Year Award in the Engineering Project category. Representatives from the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) accepted the award at the 12th Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum in Montreal, Quebec.
